The IRS has extended the Federal Income Tax due date for individuals to May 17, 2021.  Since the City of Napoleon follows the Federal due date, our tax due date for individuals will be extended to May 17th as well. Please note that this extension does not apply to estimated tax payments that are due on April 15, 2021.  The request for a filing extension must be received in writing by the May 17th date.  The extension date is October 15th.

Please be advised that any tax payment made will be applied to taxes owed for any previous years in the order in which such taxes became due. First applied to any penalties due, then to any interest due, and finally to any tax due.

2021 tax year:

  • interest rate is 5% per annum;
  • penalty on unpaid income tax and unpaid estimated income tax = 15% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty on unpaid withholding tax = 50% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty for failure to file timely return = $25 per month or fraction thereof, regardless of tax liability, up to $150 per return

 

2019 & 2020 tax years:

  • interest rate is 7% per annum;
  • penalty on unpaid income tax and unpaid estimated income tax = 15% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty on unpaid withholding tax = 50% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty for failure to file timely return = $25 per month or fraction thereof, regardless of tax liability, up to $150 per return

 

2017 & 2018 tax years:

  • interest rate is 6% per annum;
  • penalty on unpaid income tax and unpaid estimated income tax = 15% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty on unpaid withholding tax = 50% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty for failure to file timely return = $25 per month or fraction thereof, regardless of tax liability, up to $150 per return

 

2016 tax year:

  • interest rate is 5% per annum;
  • penalty on unpaid income tax and unpaid estimated income tax = 15% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty on unpaid withholding tax = 50% of the amount not timely paid;
  • penalty for failure to file timely return = $25 per month or fraction thereof, regardless of tax liability, up to $150 per return

 

2015 tax year and prior:

  • interest rate is 1% per month;
  • 2% penalty per month;
  • one time $25 late filing fee
