ELECTRIC METER REPLACEMENT

December 2024

The City of Napoleon’s electric department, Napoleon Power & Light (NPL), will be implementing a system-wide meter upgrade beginning this month and is expected to continue into the next year. The necessary maintenance and meter upgrade will cause momentary disruption in service.

Electric crews will make a reasonable attempt to notify the customer prior to the disconnection by knocking on doors with placement or furnishing of a door hanger according to the City of Napoleon’s Rules, Terms & Conditions Governing Sale Of Electrical Service (Rule 11.3 Disconnection for City Repairs).

Napoleon Power & Light crews will systematically replace older electric meters with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) meters, which allow for automated, frequent, and remote reading of usage data, providing more detailed information about consumption patterns to both the customer and the utility company; essentially, it's a program to upgrade traditional meters to smart meters with advanced communication capabilities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can I request a new electric meter at my home or business?

There’s no need to request a new smart meter. NPL will install approximately 6,000 new smart meters in phases for existing customers. We’re working to replace every customer’s meter as quickly as we can!

Will the new meter be installed in the same location as the current meters?

Yes, NPL plans to install new meters in the same location.

Will there be a disruption in electric service during installation of the meter?

During installation, your electric service will be disrupted for about 5 to 10 minutes. If the disruption is any longer, a NPL meter technician will come to your door to inform you of the lengthened disruption.

Will I be notified if I am using electricity when they arrive to change out the meter?

Yes. One of our meter technicians will inform you that they are preparing to change out the meter before the electricity is disrupted.

Who is installing the new meters?

NPL's crew is working diligently and efficiently to change out the meters. Each one of our technicians is identified by a branded City of Napoleon vehicle and their City of Napoleon uniforms.

Please contact the Electric Department between 7:00AM and 3:00 PM at 419-599-1891 for additional question about the new meters and what to expect when your meter is changed out.
